Today, Portugal celebrates its 50th anniversary of Liberty Day!
Dia da Liberdade commemorates the Carnation revolution (Revoluςão dos Cravos) of 1974, which led to the overthrow of the authoritarian Estado Novo regime and the establishment of democracy in Portugal. The revolution was characterized by the placing of red carnations in the barrels of soldiers, guns and tanks. It is considered a “peaceful” revolution with minimal bloodsheds compared to other revolutions and coups with four people killed, and several others injured.
Here are some photographs I captured during the peaceful celebratory parade, which started at the Military Museum Porto and ended in front of the Municipal Hall in Aliados. A concert was also held at Jardins do Palácio de Cristal at 8pm to conclude the day.
